What is the name of your state? Oregon

I am renting a house in Southern Oregon.

Recently I stopped getting my Electric bill. I then recieved a phone call from the property management company wanting to know why the electric bill hasnt been paid.

It seems that the owner of the property set up with the electric company that if the bill falls past due. It would switch over into the owners name and he would then recieve the bill and notices.

The bill at one point did fall past due and this changed happend without my knowledge. So now i have no bill, and am being asked by the management company to pay the bill, which I no longer have.

Is this practice legal? No where in my lease does it state that this would happen. Do I have any rights in this matter. Any advice wouold be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Yup, im serious. I am lucky the bill was paid. But now im stuck with not getting a bill and not knowing how much my electric bill will be every month. But I will contact the management co. and get it worked out.

I have read the rest of the posts in the thread and yes I suppose the owner was covering his own arse. Pipes can freeze here but only in the middle of winter in the area that I am in. I make good money as a logger and I do have 3 children. So the last thing im going to do is let the electricity be shut off. But, since I live in a forest sometimes mail arrives late or even sometimes not at all. Which is what made me late the one time. I look at this as a learning experience. I never knew that an owner could set things up that way, but now I know. Thank you all for the help.

I hear ya . My bro is raising his 2 girls alone . Request a copy of the Bill ( send it return receipt Certified Letter - Keep a Copy )so you can pay it and explain the circumstances to the Utility Co. Yep work it out .

I Had a Landlord once rent me an upstairs Apt . I was responsible for utilities . Come to find Out in the winter I was paying for the whole house Heat . He said that was the agreement , There was only one meter for the House . I said no it wasn't . I just moved . Nothing in writing .
