What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Indiana

I recently sold study materials to a buyer in California for $300 and sent via USPS. The buyer claims he received the package badly damaged with the majority of the materials missing from the package (he claims they may have fallen out in transit). Buyer wants $300 or will "take it to the next level." He did not request or pay for insurance on the package. Am I liable although I fulfilled my part to ship it to him?

I agree completely, you should have insured it. It doesn't cost that much, and you don't find yourself in positions like this. Lesson learned. :)

You are obligated to get the item to the buyer in the condition it was advertised. How you chose to do so is up to you. Insurance would have protected you, not the buyer!
