I have been living with someone for 12 years and have been paying him monthly for household expenses. Is there something that I can do to with regards to seperation and getting some of my money back. The house is in his name and I have cancelled checks to prove payment.

My response:

I'm not quite sure I understand your question or concern.

You say you've "been living with someone for 12 years and have been paying him monthly for household expenses" and you are seeking "some of [your] money back", yet you give no legal reason, or otherwise, for such request.

Did you expect to live there for free, or for some amount lower than what you had been paying ?

What is the purpose of, and background for, your question ?

We have been living together as boyfriend/girlfriend. We never got married. When we moved in together all the furniture and other household items were mine. Since then he has bought and replaced the furniture and other items. I'm not looking for half of those items. I'm looking for a cash settlement so that I can start over again.

My response:

Since Virginia is not a common law marriage State, you're not entitled to anything if it's not in your name.

You get to move out, if you want to, with whatever is yours. Period.
