I am a small business owner in Salt Lake City, Ut. I have been advertising my services for adult phone fantasy entertainment in the Salt Lake Tribune for the last 3 years. I am somewhat worried over the recent change of ownership to the LDS church. I have called my advertising contacts incessantly to find out how this will affect my ability to advertise in this paper and I have been told I shouldn't worry about any possible changes in policy. They state "We will continue to be an independent voice for the community." If such a policy change did occur would I have any recourse against such policies.

This is how I generate almost 100% of my business and I am worried that I may no longer have the ability to advertise which would prety well destroy my business.

My response:

No, you wouldn't. A newspaper has every right to include or exclude advertising. The First Amendment, in most respects, protects freedom of expression - - not freedom to advertise.

This opinion was not based upon what you do for a living. Advertising exclusions go on all the time. For example, take a look at some other newspapers in your city. You probably won't find the type of advertising you do; not because those advertisers haven't tried. Rather, a newspaper, like a store, has a right to allow whom they want to enter their store, or to advertise.

You can't expect a right-wing conservative newspaper to take advertising of the type that doesn't agree with the format of their idiology. Try advertising what you do in the Catholic church or Jewish Temple newspaper. I don't think you'll get very far.

In summary, a newspaper has a right to set editorial and advertising policy concerning what they will, or will not, print.

sorry trying this again...

I wanted to say to "I am always Liable", thanks for your thoughts and reply. I appreciate it.

I'm still not really familiar with posting on here and seemed to have posted my reply to you incorrectly. But that's all I wanted to say...thanks, that is.

My response:

You're welcome.

Actually, I'd like to thank you for coming here and asking such good, and thought-provoking, questions.

As you can see from some of the other posts, they're fairly run-of-the-mill type questions - - repeated over and over, just by different people.

But yours, on the other hand, are different and really make you think.

Thanks for your posts. More than a few of us appreciate them.
