Giving survival needs alone is not illegal, according to my understanding. Some of it would depend on what you consider survival needs, and the law considers survival needs. as long as they match up, it is not illegal.

As far as being too strict, how can anyone say without seeing how you interact with the child?

See if there is a Tough Love organization in your area for support. There are MANY things that you can do that are perfectly legal but can chop junior off at the ankles.

Removing everything from his room save a mattress, sheets, and a couple sets of clothing folded neatly on the floor comes to mind (i.e. no furniture, no video games, TV, stereo, computer, etc.). He can EARN these things back. Heck, if need be, take off the door and replace it with a curtain! Let him earn the door back as well!

If you provide sufficient clothing, food and shelter, that is generally all that is legally required. He does not need designer clothing, McDonalds or a fully furnished room with all the amenities.

Good luck. And if dad doesn't have the stones to take action, hopefully he will support yours.
