What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

I'm a doctor, but I don't have MD plates. I normally leave a copy of my ID on the dash and I haven't gotten into any issues. One day I forgot to leave my ID on the dash. I was ticketed.

Just wondering if the law requires MD plates or would having an ID displayed suffice? My friends successfully fought of the ticket after being ticketed for the same issue. Just wondering if he was lucky..

Thanks!

The rule is clear in requiring an identifying plate: http://tinyurl.com/qgjg2ot (That's a PDF) The last paragraph on page number 43 explains.

ETA: Here is a page explaining the plates: http://www.dmv.ny.gov/profpl8.htm
