What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Georgia

We have a debtor callling us about a bill they say we owe. They can not show details of the bill only a total amount. The date of the bill is fourteen years old. We keep records by year but in the past fourteen (14) years we have moved and some records are misplaced. We have, at present, no record of this bill not being satisfied many years ago. Can the company still collect after so long a time with no communications with us until now? How would we know that this is even our bill?

14 years is long past the statute of limitations which would be 6 years at the max in Georgia.

You can do one of several things;

tell them you refuse to pay

send them a cease and desist letter

or

request validation of the debt

With the debt being this old, they cannot legally collect it through the courts.

I do not know offhand how the SoL can be reset in Georgia. In some states, a simple promise to pay will reset the SoL so I would be cautious what you say to the CA.
