What is the name of your state? CA

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but I could not find the answer in the canned freeadvice pages and on the forums, there is no suitable topic that I could find, so I wanted to ask for directions of how to proceed.

I have a grandiosa idea I am not even sure if it can work or not. If it works, bringing a prototype alive will require a hefty amount of money, wiping out my retirement savings and everything. Prior to investing heavily into this idea, I want to check if somebody has applied for patents on the idea same or similar to mine, making my investment a dumb one.

As a newbie entreprenur-wanna-be, I want to access the US Patent office records and make a search and see if anything similar to my idea has been patented, regardless if it came alive or not.

Is there an easy way of doing this online ? If not, where around Los Angeles, CA, one can go and look for this information ?

Thanks for all the information in advance.
