I arrived at my apartment (in Ohio) on August 20, 2000. When I finally got a lease from my landlord, it was dated beginning on August 31, 2000, and my landlord said not to worry about paying for the days I stayed in the apartment before I got the lease. The problem is that my landlord now wants me to pay for those days that I stayed in the apartment, before the actual date on the lease. Can my landlord do this and do I have to pay?

NO......a lease is a lease, YOU and the LANDLORD have to honor it because it works both ways.

The landlord let you move in early because HE chose to do so and he is the landlord. If he really wanted to charge you the 10 days it should have been written in the lease or had a rider attached signed by the both of you.

The landlords only retaliation is not to renew your lease, but if you like it there, hustle the landlord, say "i will pay you the 10 days if you give me a new 2 year lease starting today."
