I recv'd a small clms notice. I am going to pay this prior to the
court date. Do I still need to appear in court in Massachusetts?

Before paying the debt, talk with the creditor or attorney. Be SURE to get a written release and that they will file a Motion of Dismissal (or Non-Suit) of the lawsuit upon payment of the disputed amount.

The last time I attended a small claims court session, 7 of the 14 scheduled cases were dismissed because neither party were in attendance. Only 3 cases had both parties there, 3 only the plaintiff showed and in one case, only the respondant was there. The whole session, scheduled for 3 hours lasted about 35 minutes.
