Hello. Forgive me if this is not in the right section, or even the wrong place... I am just not sure where to seek advice. It seemed like the place to start.

I live in Las Vegas, NV.

My parents were renting. The owners of the house were going through divorce. The man has been given permission by the courts to sell and liquidate his properties. He gave a notice of 30 days for everyone to be out of the house. My mother and father decided that they were done, and decided to separate. Note that they have been legally divorced for years. My mother took me and moved into a condo. She has already signed the lease and everything. We have lived here for about two weeks. My father and brother still live in the house. My mother's name is nowhere on the lease for that house. Only my father's is. However, my mother's name was on the utility bills. My mother insists to me that she cannot take her name off the bills, and that, even though we no longer live there, she has to still pay the bills.

I don't understand this at all. If she is shown to be living somewhere else, having signed a lease and changed her address and everything, how is she still legally obligated to pay the utility bills on her last place of residence? Since she no longer lives there, shouldn't the bills be transferred to the residents who DO? I don't see how it is even a choice.. You can't just decide to not pay the utilities on a place you are living. I feel like the bills should automatically go to my father...

By this logic, when he's gone, she is still going to be paying bills when someone new moves in..

I know I probably sound like an idiot here, I am just confused and frustrated. My dad is taking advantage of my mother by refusing to pay ANY of the bills, and I want this to stop. We are trying to start a new life here, and he is financially crippling us by his refusal to grow up and take responsibility of his life.

How do we get out from under this mess? Any advice at all?

Since your parents appear to be legally divorced, there is no reason why your mother cannot take those utilities out of her name. However perhaps her reason for choosing not to do so is due to the 30 days notice.
