payments to school course via mail

two years ago i entered school threw the mail.i payed monthly payments.6 months into the schooling,my x-husband turned full time alcoholic and i started paying 31% child support.i could no longer pay the school.i tried contact to exsplain my fiances.but could get no answer returned. school stop and so did payment 2 years later i get a large bill on my credit history.can i get out of this situation or do i have to pay them?i did sign a contract.i live in wis.

You signed a contract. They are not responsible for your personal life. You owe the money.
