What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

My friend have been sued from selling international edition textbooks in USA. I'm wondering what would be the possible consequences if he (Thai citizen under study VISA) didn't respond to the summon?

- In terms of VISA status (Will he get deported from USA?)
- Will he get caught and put in jail?

From my research, the worst case of a guy copying (that's the real violation) solution manuals and sell, eventually get to pay around 300,000 USD.

You won't go to jail -- you are being sued, it's a civil matter, not a criminal matter. As to how your visa might be affected, you might want to post a question to the immigration thread -- although it's unlikely that a civil judgment would impact your current visa.

That said, ignoring a summons will likely result in a default judgment being entered against you, which can have all sorts of ramifications depending on how diligent the other side is in trying to enforce the judgment.

Dear divgradcurl,

I have read some of your comments on selling International edition textbooks online. You mentioned that it is not against any law (AKA, it is legal). However, why publishers are still filing lawsuits against sellers if it is not illegal? Is that ok to sue people who do nothing wrong? And if one is being sued by publisher, what should they do?
