Pending eviction

Our daughter lives in California. She has rented the same apartment for a long time with no lease. She is on total disability (100% SSI disabled) and without resources. She has been paying rent on time with no past problems or complaints voiced by her landlord. She keeps the premises in good condition. Without notice, her landlord has given her 30 days to get out. She has nowhere to go and little prospects of finding a place with reasonable rent for her income. What can she do? Is there a free legal aid in the SF bay area who can help? Can her landlord enter her apartment and remove her possessions?

The landlord usually needs an eviction order to remove her. In some parts of California, like San Francisco, there are rent control laws that protect tenants and make it hard to remove them. She should contact her city authorities - like the housing department - and ask. Otherwise she can't just stay because she wants to absent a lease -- landlords have rights also.
