my mother has been working as a cafeteria worker for almost 15 years and belongs to a union. Only recently was a pension plan enacted into the contract - the provision is that since the enactment an employee must be employed three years to be in the pension plan which naturally qualifies my mother. She was informed that she would only be getting $50 monthly upon retirement from this plan. This seems like a meager amount after 15 years of work. Is this arbitrary amount regulated by the union contract or is there any law in New York which regulates the amount based on salary and amount of time worked?

If the pension has only recently been enacted, how is it she's expecting to be credited with 15 years of service?

They are not required to make pensions retroactive to the beginning of her service. If the pension has only been in effect for say, one year, then she only gets one year's worth of credit,
