What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

Hi,

I'm new to the forum but I'm trying to decide on a dilemma. I'm doing research on my family genealogy/history and I have found some great vintage photos of my grandparents country online. I am hoping to put all my research in a book for me and my family. It won't go on sale to the public. I'm looking at book binding/publishing companies that will bind the book nicely for me but they also mention that an ISBN number will be attached to the book and that it will stay in their database in case I want to order more. Will I be breaking any copyright laws by putting these online photos in my book even though I won't be selling it and it will only be used for personal use? I am hoping to get more than 1 copy printed to give to my family but none will be sold.

Thanks, any advise will be appreciated.

How old are the photos? If the photos were first published before 1923, the copyrights have expired in the US. There are other ways photos can make their way into the public domain in the US, as well.

The photos are of what country? Is the photographer from that country? Copyright laws vary from country to country.

You can contact the photo source to investigate rights-ownership more fully and, if the photos are still copyright-protected, you will need to get permission from the copyright-holders to use the photos for your book.

Good luck.
