I have several vendors wanting money for music rights. ASCAP and 2 others in particular. Now they each want $250 and up per year in order for us to be allowed to play the juke box and have live bands. Why do I the business owner and not the juke box owner or the band leader pay for these services? How do I know if this new company is for real or if it's a scam?!?!? Please help!

Write ASCAP/others and ask them to confirm that they have designated these particular vendors as their agents for the purposes of collecting money for jukebox royalties. If they confirm, they can't later come back & argue you have to pay again. Also, if your live bands perform only their original music & no covers, ASCAP has no right to demand any kind of royalty for live performances. $250/yr for the jukebox sounds like a good deal to me.

This is not legal advice and you are not my client. Double check everything with your own attorney and your state's laws.

We have the same problem, but you don't have to pay for the jukebox if the jukebox is leased.
