I live in Alabama, and have recently asked to see my peosonal file. When they sat me down they said that i could not move and i am not aloud to make copys of anything in it. Is this true in my state?

Also, my boss told me that if he or anyone wants to put something in my file all he has to do is sign it "employee refuesed to sign" and it goes in anyways.

What truth is their to that?

Thanks in advance!

I really don't know the laws of Alabama regarding personnel files and their information. However, if we assume that your state's laws are the same as mine (California) then you have a right to a copy of all documents in it that you signed. For those documents that you did not sign, you have a right to inspect the entire personnel file at a reasonable time and place (during business hours) as set by your employer.

With regard to their using that ploy to place information in it, that is often used. Is it legal in your state? I don't know. Is it ethical? Not sure, but I would not think it is.

I hope this helps.
