What is the name of your state? CA
In June 05 i was caught shoplifting under $20. I gave my info to the Loss prevention had my pic taken given a copy of petty theft law and was let go. (no cops, or fingerprints) I receieved a civil demand for $200 in the mail which i paid right away. I never heard anything else.. Is the statue of limitations over since its been more than a year? Could this come up on any kind of criminal/ background check?

It's over.
You can't be charged for petty theft - PC 484(a) for that event.

If asked, you were never arrested.
never charged.
never convicted.

You have a clean record.

You probably signed an agreement not to enter that store. Enough time has passed, that they probably wouldn't enforce it, but I wouldn't shop there - that was why they took your picture.

Well ... if you were to apply for a law enforcement position, or one that requires a similar sort of background check, you will be asked to reveal any crimes that you committed even if you were not charged or arrested. Any response could be verified through a polygraph examination.

However, if you never plan to get involved in government or related security work, you can honestly blow it all off. You got lucky.
