Money was stolen from a rent drop off in the building I manage. Out of 21 units, the owner is ONLY subjecting me to a polygraph test. I have no problem with this as I am innocent, but given that he has point blank refused to even cast a shadow of suspicion toward any of the other 20 odd tenants in the building, do I have any right to a defamation lawsuit? He blatantly told me in an open hallway in earshot of anyone listening that only me, my husband or the tenant whose rent was dropped in there knew it was there and now it's gone! ANYONE could have heard this. Now - after we prove ourselves innocent, of course, we plan to move which means we will be leaving not only our home, but our job, relocating my 5 year old son etc., all because we cannot live with the discomfort of having him think that we would do such a thing - not to mention the "rumors" flying around the building about us! Does anyone have any advice?

Could it be that YOU are the MANAGER "in charge" and not just a "one of the other 20 tenants"???

Who else had access to this cash?

The suspicions may be well justified. Hence: No cause for retaliation.

Q: do I have any right to a defamation lawsuit?

A: Yes. Be prepared to spend about $10K and three years. If you win he will continue doing it. If you lose he will continue doing it.

That is definitely the "DUH!" of the week. Good answer.
