What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IL

On the last day of the divorce and custody trial in March of 2011. The judged ruled granting the divorce and custody of our child to me, the father. We went back to court on May 6, 2011 to get the decree signed and put into order.

The order is titled " Judgement for Dissolution of marriage"

It stated the standard... court's jurisdiction of the subject matter and parties, residence, marriage detail, etc... then the official portion

It is then ordered and adjudged... as follows:

1) who gets custody
2) visitation rights by ex-wife
3) who gets tax excemption
4) Each gets to keep personal property
5) College expense
6) Responsibility for each party's medical insurance
7) real estate issue
8) attorney's fees
9)some more standard stuff
10) This court shall retain jurisdiction over the parties hereto and the subject matter hereof for purposes of carrying out and enforcing the terms and provisions of this Judgement for Dissolution of Marriage, including the entry of a qualified Domestic Relations Order or Orders, and all of the terms and provisions set forth in the parenting agreement incorporated herein and the entry of such other and future orders as this court shall deem proper.

So as you can see it addressed all the standard issues in a divorce but it lacked explicit language that the divorce was granted or that the marriage has been terminated.

The title states its the judgement for dissolution of marriage, the last item once again addressed the document as the judgement for dissolution of marriage.

I have a pending case with immigration and they had asked me to provide ducumentation that clearly states that my previous marriage was in facet dissolved/terminated.

How do I address this? This was the decree. My attorney made an error by leaving that once piece of information out.

I dunno if there was an order entered on the March trial stating that the divorce was granted then since the order wasnt signed till may 6.

The decree is short and is 4-pages long. Is there some kind of a certificate I can get from the county that shows I am divorced aside from this document?

Is it necessary for me to file a petition to amend the decree to clearly state that the marriage was terminated?

Thank you.

I know that I'm gonna get asked what was stated on the decree so here it is...

I went to the county clerk records office and they looked at me weird when I was asking them for proof as this is all that I need they said. There was no certificate filed nor was it needed and that the fact that the document was titled Judgement for Dissolution of Marriage should be sufficient proof for my divorce. Their argument was that there wouldnt be a judgement for dissolution if a divorce was not granted. Which makes sense.

Yeah I'm really not sure what you thought was unclear about "Judgement for dissolution of marriage".
