I have an OTC drug product that I am going to have manufactured, marketed and sold but I am choosing not to get a patent on it. I am going to keep the formula a "trade secret." (This is a topical drug with an active ingredient that is already "recognized as safe and effective")

What I need to know is, taking the above into consideration, what else can I do to protect this product?

This is in the works as we speak so I need an answer as soon as someone can. Thank you so much in advance.

As you have to post ingredients on the label, the trade secret approach may be difficult, although CocaCola has used that approach successfully for 100 years.
