I am a subcontractor in NY and I belong to the local carpenters union . I am a owner operater and I have finished my project 100%. I am trying to get paid but the General Contractors that I have done work for says he will not pay me until I have shown them proof that I have paid my union benfits, is that legal. The reason I ask is because the money owed to me from the project in question is the money I would use to pay my benfits? what are my rights? Seems strange since I provided a service, I would think they should pay for services rendered??
