What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Can anyone recommend a couple of law books for someone who isn't going to law school but wants to learn about things like the litigation process and perhaps how to research case law. I always though it would be nice to do my own leg work if and when I get a demand letter from some loud attorney who starts citing laws out of context. It would be nice to know how to respond to such threats. I learned a lot recently when I was involved in a law suit. I just want to learn more.

Re the underlined: That would involve you reading reviews of law books etc. Yourself.

(Though I will say, the NOLO series generally comes highly recommended)
