What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TEXAS

What law in TEXAS says that police officers do or don't have to tell the truth when asked a direct question?

You're looking for something that doesn't exist. Of course under oath they must tell the truth but other than that there is no law that says they must reply truthfully to a question. The police lie all the time to suspects in an attempt to get a confession or extract information. Or they may pretend like something is no big deal hoping you will admit to it so they can arrest you.

You're better off just not speaking to the police, especially if you may have committed a crime.

Google "urban legends". You will find many cites claiming both sides of the issue. Then note the source of the info. The whacko sites claim the officer's cannot lie.

My favorite is when criminals selling drugs or stolen property ask the buyer if he is a cop, like if that is some sort of due diligence on their part.
