Yes, you must definitely take into consideration that they could, especially in private industry, decide to eliminate your wife's position too just because they were angry with you and tired of dealing with you and your potential lawsuit. It would be legal for them to do so.

The British say it as that you were "found redundant" which is just politely that we don't want you to work for us anymore, so we laid you off, and they can do it. You may get unemployment, but that's all, and it's not much. And our labor laws, even in California, which is definintely a little more generous toward employees, are mostly for the protection and benefit of employers in this country.

But you have learned a lot, and hopefully a lot of positives have come from your over ten years of employment. Good experience, some good references, and if nothing else, you have learned better ways of dealing with unfair and bullying supervisors, learned exactly what they can and cannot do to you. Focus on the positives and move forward quickly. As has been said, best of luck to you.

Please let us know what happens if you remember :)
Today my spouse, who also works for the company that "laid me off", was given a $6000 bonus (she never received a bonus before in 10+ years of employment) for a job well done, and it was very much deserved! Needless to say, I will be accepting the severance and UI benefits offered. [No matter how fishy all of this is!]
There really are angels watching over us.

Thanks again everyone!

Time to put this all in the past and be thankful.
