After my divorce in New Jersey (I live in New York now) I realized that I forgot about some personal property and important papers that were in storage during the marriage in a house owned by one of my former wife's relatives. As part of the divorce, I signed a settlement agreement that said we agreed on the distribution of property, but then I remembered the stuff in storage. My former wife now says that she moved it to the unsecured basement of our former apartment after I moved out, where it sat for four months without my knowledge. The missing items have little tangible value, but are an important record of my academic work and job as a writer and I am very angry that she moved them without informing me and is now implying that they must have been stolen or thrown away while they were in the basement. She refuses to talk to me further. While we were married she sometimes threw away or destroyed things that were important to me and I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case here, too. What recourse, if any, do I have in finding out more about what happened, or recovering any token monies from her if the stuff is really gone?
