What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? LA

This question is mainly for curiousity's sake.

My daughters attend a K-12 Catholic school, where I am also employed. When a student's lunch account has become overdrawn bills are sent home with the children, folded over and tightly secured with tape. However, the high school also posts a list at the entrance to the serving line with the student's outstanding balances.

Are any privacy laws being broken here?

Like I said, this is just curiosity on my part. I'm not one to get upset about things that happen at school unless my kids' well being is seriously affected. My oldest and I have even joked about her being on "the wall of shame" as she and I call it, when I have gotten behind on her lunch bill. I just got to wondering if someone wanted to make a fuss about it would they get anywhere. (As added info, this is an act by the cafeteria, not the school. The cafeteria is not overseen by the school, it is a separate entity.)

How exactly is the cafeteria not affiliated with the school?

I would make an issue out of it. I don't know that FERPA would apply here, which is the federal privacy act, since the record is not an education related record, and also since this is a private school - but I don't think it's ethical for the cafeteria to post information about minors.

If you and your daughter approach this as "the wall of shame," then guaranteed there are kids who honestly are ashamed to be on that wall. It's almost as if the cafeteria is using a "bullying tactic" to shame children - and that isn't right. I would ask nicely for them to take it down, citing above reasons, and if they don't - I would demand it of the school leadership. Shaming children IN NO WAY helps their education, and that should be the school's focus. If the school doesn't take it down, I would consider their judgement suspect, and might consider transferring.

(seriously, this really bothers me. I wouldn't want my kid being shamed. That's pretty pathetic on the part of the school)

**A: wow, brings back memories of nuns hitting our hands with the metal edge of the ruler. Back then it was ok, now it would be child abuse.
The nuns didn't like me...you know...using that logic and all.

I would certainly ask that the list be removed. It really is unfair to shame a child for the parents' oversight, neglect or other inablility to pay the school lunch fee.

That said, it happens to me all the time......I forget and then LittleCSO comes home and says, "Mooo-ooom!! The lunch lady says you gotta send money or they're going feed me boiled cabbage and sardines!!"

So I let it go a few more days :D:D:D and then pay the school.
