My mother is in the hospital and has not designated anyone to take care of her affairs when she is unable. She lives in Illinois and I live in Missouri. My question is.... can I get some sort of power of attorney to take care of her affairs from here or do I need to talk to a lawyer in her area?

You would be best served by a consultation with an atty in her area, if not in her town then in the County where she resides.

Good luck

Is your mother competent?
