Hello, all.

I'm a 23 year old non-smoking male. I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes last year. I also have mild asthma and require only a seasonal inhaler. I have had continuous coverage of these conditions; at no point in the last six years have I been without insurance of some type.

I was recently hired by a Japanese company and will be leaving to live in Japan this summer. The insurance I can get through that company doesn't cover pre-existing conditions, optical, or dental.

I recently visited the diabetes center in my town...the doctor discovered that my body chemistry has completely normalized and my diabetes has gone into remission as a result of heavy weight loss and diet control. I no longer need any medication or treatmens for the diabetes and the doctor believes that as long as I stay healthy I shouldn't have any trouble with the disease until I'm much older. In fact, it has disappeared so suddenly and entirely that he is currently running tests to investigate the possibiity that I may have simply had an infection/damage to my pancreas.

I need to acquire insurance that will cover my diabetes, optical and dental care abroad. Anyone know where to begin?

Thanks for your time and attention.

EDIT: I accidentally posted this under my girlfriend's screen name....I know she's been on here before and didn't want to cause any confusion. :D

Begin with asking your new company's HR department to suggest options for coverage in Japan.
I have already done this. The real question is, do my diabetes and asthma count as a pre-existing condition since I have had continous medical coverage?

Yes, for employer sponsored group coverage, but if you purchase individual coverage all bets are off.
