What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? PA

I live in an area that had an association that was not mandintory to join and I did not join. They have now decided everyone must join and are billing me for dues. I do not benifit from their association and do not want to join. Can they make me join? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

What if anything was recorded to the title of the house that could give a homeowners association the right to form up later and force you to pay? thats what you should look for , if you do not find such a thing then best choice is to hire a title search firm to review EVERY thing about the purchase and all recorded documents tied to owning that home. IF they cannot find any thing then the next time the group sends you anything in writting go see a real estate atty with your documentation in hand and let her/him send to them a letter on your behalf.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The deeds make no reference to this association and the only recorded document concerning this association is that the membership is "voluntary".

I don't have my file with me but I can get it tomorrow to get the exact answer. Hopefully I can hook up with you again, but if not, thanks for your time.
