Texas: I was several years behind on property taxes and a lawsuit was filed against me. I was able to pay the county all listed debt that was shown. Now I am receiving a letter from lawyer stating that I still owe them research fees and court fees. Since there has not been any trial do I need to pay these fees or can I fight them. As they state that if they are not paid, they will continue with lawsuit for lien against my property.

A creditor is generally entitled to collect from the debtor the costs associated with pursuing a legal action. When the suit settles prior to trial, the costs will be less than they would be if the matter had gone to trial but there are court fees and attorney fees and case preparation fees that do not disappear just because the debtor pays the underlying debt.

You can try to negotiate to reduce the fees being charged but how successful you will be is anyone's guess. I suspect you won't be too successful but it is probably worth the attempt.

Good luck.
