my state:TEXAS
took in a dog(8months),who was tied up for 4hrs from a woman who had been caring for temporarily (4 months)as 16yr old owner couldn't have it due to landlord. As she had tried to take it to the no kill shelter or pound, I offered to take it in assuming girl knew the woman was getting rid of it. Had dog 14 days, during which no inquiries by woman or girl were made about the dog,so I then took it in for shots and spaying. On same day, girl came to my place of work saying she wants the dog back, and being threatening. Do I have to give it back? What are my rights if I am further harrassed?
THANK YOU

My response:

A dog, or cat, or any other non-farm animal, is personal property - - not unlike your television or car, at home.

Since the woman in whose care the girl left the dog had no ownership rights, she had no right whatsoever to transfer ownership, care, custody or control of that "personal property" to you.

Therefore, you must return the dog to its rightful owner, or suffer the consequences - - both criminal and civil liabilities.

And no, you are not entitled to reimbursement for the Vet care or shots. You had no right to do that. The dog was not your property.

Good luck to you.
