I live in San Diego County in California, In front of my home is a private road that is my property and there are in & Egress easements. The question I have is that I want to put a speed bump on my part of the private road in front of my home and want to know if I can do so. The land that the road is on is clearly my property.

Read the easement, IF it is an exclusive use grant to others you might not be allowed to do anything ...

IF you are it's still a Maybe....a speed bump does not in my opinion restrict the passage along the easement any more than a pot hole might....however I might take pains to,clearly mark the speed bump from both directions and check local, and state law as to any design restrictions or requirements on such bumps,( I ve seen codes as to height and at least local to me they are marked well in advance )

.if some user of the easement hits the bump too fast and messes up her BMW you are sure to get sued !

I think your solution may cause more problems than the original problem ...be careful.

Thank You, I did have it stripe & put a sign up as per our fire Dept. recommendation and only 5 other neighbors on the street and I know for sure 4 of them could not spell BMW..So maybe I'm good. The hump is only 2" tall x 18" wide. I do thank you for your advise.

You shouldn't allude to your neighbors intellect as you can't seem to spell "advice" despite the fact it's the name of this site. :)

The 18 inches wide is a potential problem and possibly a serious one. If you are talking wide in the sense that its 18 inches as the car approaches it. The wider the speed bump the more likely it is to damage cars. In many areas 18 inches would be unacceptable.

I didn't see any published standards for your county ....but heights up to 3-4" are common and widths 12-36" are common . Verticle height is what jars speeding vehicles ...I'm sure 2" will make the point .

Look, the wider the speed bump the more likely it is that it will damage a car that is going too fast for the bump or is unaware that a speed bump is located on the street.

I would NOT put one in that is any wider than 6 inches to avoid that liability. Otherwise, you had better plan to install plenty of signage and take out an extra umbrella liability policy.

Many years ago I and a half a dozen other people sued someone who had installed a wide speed bump which caused damage to our cars, and we won.

Well noted, I do have the appropriate signage and painted. The overall is 2" tall and slope from 0" to 2" back to 0" over the 18" wide area.
