What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IL

I am recently divorced. My ex is now taking me back to court.

I can no longer afford my attorney. Can I make the decision to go pro-se at this time? I think that I can handle this on my own. However, I would like to keep him in case I need him for something more in the future.

I am not sure how this works. Any advice would be appreciated.

You are represented or you are not. Choose.
However, you can change that choice at any time. If you choose to let your attorney go today, you can always hire an attorney later if you wish. Of course, the attorney may not be happy to have to clean up any mess you create - and some attorneys might even decline to take you back.

Ask the attorney if he would be willing to take on an advisory role. You would handle all the work, but run it by him for advice...

That would make things cheaper for you.
