A few years back, I was sued for product liability by a lady who used the product in a way that was completely unforseeable (certainly not what the product was designed for) and without her using the least bit of common sense. She Won! I paid!
In this case, the product was sold to an institution and the lady was hired by the institution as a subcontractor.

I am thinking of starting another project (in my garage, as with the first product) which will be in a completely different field. How can I protect myself from being sued for other peoples lack of common sense?

Hire an attorney to write the product instructions for use and disclaimers. Also get the patent under a Corporation and distribute/sell the product under a different Corporation.
