Proof of Income and Health Insurance

Hi, I'm currently unemployed but receiving money every month from a friend to live off of so that I can focus all of my attention on becoming a programmer. I'm thinking about getting health insurance (I've never had any before) but I read that they need proof of income. Will there be any issues for me to get health insurance despite the fact that my money is not income?

Unless you claim the gift as income it isn't income. Where they ask you how much you make the answer is zero.
