What is the name of your state? Maryland
I had someone living at my property in the city who departed, and the place was vacant in my absence.
Apparently the property was auctioned without my knowledge at a tax sale. I had no notice that this
was happening. My property taxes were all paid. I had found out at the state's attorney's office
that the tax sale had occurred and that I would have to pay about 1000 dollars to get the property back.
I went to the Baltimore City offices on Holliday St, and I was told an attorney had already filed suit, and
that I would have to consult that attorney and pay his fee before I could redeem my property. I spoke
to my contact at the states attorneys office, and he implied that attorney's fee were excessive, and that
there were others in my predicament that charged that attorney with excessive fees in court. He did not
mention how. The total fees now amount well in excess of 3000 dollars. The attorney redemption amount
is about $2200. After five days the rate will go up.
What is my best course of action in this matter? If I pay those fees to get my property back, can
I challenge them later? What procedure should I use?
