Is is possible for someone to place a lien on personal property? My father is insisting that I owe him $20,000 on the sale of my home. I had purchased it from him 5 years ago and he had given me a large discount on the sale price of the home. Now that I'm selling it, he insists he is entitled to this amount. My mother is dead set against it, she was involved with my purchase as well. Can he put a lien on the property? There is no legal papers with any of this on it.

Yes, but your post deals with real property.

"...There is no legal papers with any of this on it...."

Tell pa that if it's not in writing, it didn't happen. If it's in writing, that's the way it happened.

He has no claim to your real estate or any sales proceeds.

Thanks for the quick response.

Now, I may have screwed up because when we were arguing about this through e-mail, and just to shut him up, I said something along the lines of "I will try to work with the bank to get an extra $20,000 for my brother when we go get our new mortgage" He saved the e-mail.

Now will this come back to bite me in the butt?

Also, he had made some pretty dangerous threats towards my husband. We made a police report, but we did not press charges. Can we go back and press charges, or is it too late?

Tell him, "Well, I tried like I said I would in the e-mail but I couldn't get it done. Sorry!"

That cop stuff: Ask the cops those questions.
