I should have registered. I see I made a major error. I need to say that we have had exclusive use of what is now apparently the neighbors property for over eleven years - the use of the land must go back over 60 years at least. Again, what do we need to do to keep it?

Check with a local real estate attorney on the adverse posession laws in your state. If you intend to do this prepare for a fight from your neighbor.
