What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NC
I want to separate from my husband...I have a place to live, but if I leave without separation papers..can I lose my half of assets?

- Your portion of the marital proceeds is not necessarily half, though NC does default to half unless good cause is shown why "equal" is not "equitable."

- If the place you're planning to move belongs to a new boyfriend, the adulterous relationship could affect alimony and possibly even property distribution.
