i received a settlment from a job related injury before i was married. i purchased a house and business with most of the money. two years latter i was married,her name is'nt,and never was on the deed the this property and business.now that we are getting divorced,she is trying to get the property. this is in the state of nebraska. can you give me your opinion.thanks,jim

If you were in Indiana, which is where I practice, here's how it would likely go:

Whatever you had before the marriage is considered yours.

However, if the value of the home and business (and your retirement fund or any other thing of value) increased DURING the marriage, she is entitled to half of the accrued value for that time period.

And she can TRY to get anything; whether she's successful is another story.

Sounds like you have a lot at stake, GET an attorney. You cannot afford not to.
