My mother is 64, and she is seriously ill. She, however, refuses therapy, insisting that she is healthy. She has general distrust towards doctors and I am unable to convince her to take her prescribed medications.
The complication here is that she is a recent immigrant and therefore does not qualify for Medicaid yet. It would take 5 years for her to become eligible. My concern is that since I am her sponsor and fully responsible for repayment of her debts, in case she is hospitalized, it would wipe out my savings and put me in debt for many years (she may need an organ transplant). What can be done to protect my own assets, or at least assets of my husband & son? Thanks.
