pseudonyms

I'm a writer and want to work using a pseudonym. I want to remain as anonymous as possible. Is it possible to legally be paid under another name (sort of like a business does a DBA notice in teh paper) At what point do I have to give my real name. Is it possible to go through an entire transaction without doing so? i don't mind registering another name legally if that's what it takes.
