What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oregon

Just a question for you folks. We recently closed our Ebay account due to the fact that we got tired of the unscrupulous sellers. Taking to long to get items, broke items, new items that were infact used, etc etc. Two items from the same seller were advertised as new (Hard Drives). When we got the drives both were opened and in what looked to be not the original boxes. We went to the Western Digital website to check the serial numbers and found that not only were they not new, there was less then a year left on a three year warranty. We opened a case with Ebay and won, we sent the drives back to the seller immediatly when Ebay told us to do so and as soon as the seller got them we were promptly refunded. And left the appropriate feedback. Once completed, we closed our account (Dec, 2011) because as I said,,, we were just tired of the uncertainty of Ebay sellers. Come to find out over this past weekend the seller had not only left a whole lot of lies as well as false accusations on another website, he had posted all of our personal info such as our names, address, telephone number and email address. I`m very anal with regards to giving out our info to anyone. We have an unlisted phone number. Other than this info given out by this person there is no other info about us out there that the average person can find. We contacted the website webmaster and threatened to sue and the info was immediatly taken down. This website looks like some fly by night deal with no info about anything on it. Basically anybody could go one there and start posting this type of information about anybody. There are allot of peoples names and addresses along with phone numbers still there. Basically my question is,,, is this website actually breaking any laws doing what they are ? If not, there should be laws against this reckless type of behavior. Should I just consider myself lucky that they took down our info by mearly threatening a lawsuit ? I should also add that we tried to contact Ebay to let them know what this person has done but were/are unable to because apparently once you close an account you can no longer contact Ebay. Apparently Ebay has rules against this type of behavior with regard to publishing a members personal info. But then again it seems like anything goes on that site. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Yes. Time to move on.

Where to move to?

There are at least three large corporations who give out that information, INCLUDING YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, for a fee to others. Maybe you can sue the credit reporting agencies and stop this.

Your personal informtion is not as "private" as you want to believe. One website's policy does not a law make. This other "rogue" site has done nothing illegal.

Thats what I thought. I just think it is so wrong for a website to be able to be so reckless to allow such postings. You can basically post anything about anyone without any repercussions. Pretty sad

Well, there are or can be legal repercussions for making some things public (like social security numbers) or for posting some material.

But, yes, people can often get away with doing all sorts of dastardly things.

I just find it sad that people will start a website just for the pleasure of bringing other people displeasure. The state of this country is going down hill. No accountabilty anymore. To go from almost complete anonyminty to being bashed unfairly with allot of your private info thrown out to the world. All because the other person lied in the first place. While I guess I`m lucky,,, theres still a bunch of other people who`s names and info is on that site without them probably even knowing it.
