I'm inquiring from B.C. Canada and don't expect the laws differ much below the line. I'm writing a personal journal that I'm planning on publishing as a blog or book and has some sensitive information and activities of other people in it. Mostly criminal and immoral stuff, and not likely items that they could be charged with but might attract attention to them, they all well known by the police anyway. Some personal character stuff they likely wouldn't want to see aired. It has been suggested that I need to change the names of the people written about, but I don't really care what they think. They're not famous and would only be known by whoever happened to read the material and happened to know them locally. The info being all factual from my perspective and not likely putting them in a good light.

That's where you're mistaken. The laws in Canada and the US are QUITE different in many areas. No one here knows what the laws are north of the border.
