I was wondering if someone could help me. I'm from NY but go to school in Chicago, IL. I recently made a bad decision and went along with a friend and was caught attempting to leave a department store with merchandise not belonging to me.

They told me they had it all on tape and basically I carried my friend's bag on my back (he put it in there while it was on my back with my knowledge of that) with an item he had wanted as we left.

We were charged with a class A misdemeanor for attempting to steal merchandise under $150. The officer told us to just plead guilty because legal expenses would be too high. Now here are my questions:
1) Can I plead no contest or is it definitely guilty or not guilty?
2) What would I be looking at for the punishment? The maximum is 364 days in jail and a thousand dollar fine but we've never been in trouble before and are of good character...we just made stupid decisions.
3) What is supervision? The officer said that could be a possible sentence.
4) This happened in Illinois. Can any employer find out about this in the future? Would it ever be possible to seal or rid ourselves of our backgrounds? Any websites or information you provide to me would be greatly appreciated.
