My boyfriend purchased a mobile home from an independent company, who sells and places mobile homes in their communities until they are paid off. He is 4 years into his 9 year purchase agreement, and due to the recent hurricane, has applied for FEMA assistance as we have no homeowners insurance. When the inspector came out to inspect, he checked the entire mobile home, said that we definitely qualify, but needed to see the paperwork showing we were buying the house, preferably a notorized copy of the deed. Since we did not have a copy, we pulled out the purchase agreement, along with a copy of the tax rolls printed off the county website, and gave them to him to match the serial numbers to verify that my boyfriend was in fact purchasing this mobile home. At that time, the inspector noticed that the serial number on our contract did not match what was on the tax rolls. At the time, we did not know where to find the serial number on the house, so the inspector left, stating that he would have to list us as Renters, instead of Buyers, and FEMA would only cover personal property damage. Because we had not claimed any personal property, only structural damage, we were denied. At that time, we took a copy of the tax rolls and contract to the owner to show him that they didn't match. In turn, he brought a copy of the deed, showing my boyfriends name, and the serial number found on the tax rolls, which matched the house, and claimed that the serial number on the contract was a typo. We have not made a mortgage payment since, because what we are contracted to pay on paper, does not match the home we are supposed to be purchasing. What should we do? He has continuously left notices on our door regarding our house payment, claiming that he will evict us if it is not paid, but I don't think that we should be paying anything, with such a descrepency in the contract. What are the options? Im a uncertain at this point what to do.
