What is the name of your state? NY

I was given an annual employee evaluation 2 months ago. There was nothing really bad in it(not as good as before but everything has changed at my office) but I did question something the manager had said. I didn't question it for long but i did indicate my being puzzled. The numbers were decent and i did understand that the exec director was leaning on the manager to include "negative things' on all employees so I forgot about it and let it go. it wasn't anything that could get me fired or derogatory.

However i do believe that possibly to reduce the stress and tension on the manager(I noticed he was getting red when he was going over my eval) he said to me during the evaluation "you and the others are not the only workers to get evaluated, I get evaluated by employees who separate from the company when we conduct an exit interview. It is supposed to give me feedback about how I'm doing".

I took this to mean nothing more than an exit interview being just that-to give feedback about how he is as a manager.

How as time went on, I then wondered if he was being facetious--did he really bring up the topic of exit interview because it was his way of saying "don't question me or we'll show you the door..." or a way of saying that if i don't say good things about him in the exit interview, he won't say good things about me in a reference.

So this made me think, can exit interviews be used against an employee in any way upon resigning?

I get apprehensive and paranoid a great deal about this stuff but I am considered a good employee. I'm not in any trouble at work in any with my bosses

Any ideas about this?

Yes, exit interview information can be used against a resigning employee. However, usually it isn't, especially when said interviews are managed and conducted by qualified and ethical HR professionals.

Have you resigned yet? (It doesn't seem so from your post.) If you haven't, then forget all about this issue for now. This is definitely not something to lose any sleep over.

If/when you ever do resign, and you have any doubts whatsoever about the professionalism and qualifications of the HR person conducting your exit interview, then be very careful what you say.
