What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oregon
Hi,
I am planning to apply for Ph.D......I came here on H4 visa and now have my EAD(Employment Authorization Document) as a part of the green card processing for which both me and my husband filed jointly....
My question is whether my stipend be taxed? If so at what rate?
Regards,
Gauri

Your employer should give you IRS form W-4 to indicate your federal and state tax withholding.
Are stipends normally taxable in your program? You should ask the Dept Head or some of your colleagues about this. Your immigration status will not impact the taxability of your stipend.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I dont think that the stipend is taxed at my school except for state tax. What I was worried was federal tax. Since I have EAD and me and my husband would be filing the tax returns jointly. Will it be taxed then?

Because it's a stipend and I'm not familiar with your program, I'd suggest that you speak to someone in your department. Ask them about the tax with holding and how your income will be treated.
If it is federally tax free, it may be that you don't report it on your tax return (your husband's joint return) but you need to speak with someone there in the department.
